PLANNED ACTIVITIES

This is a selection of some of the activities that I implemented in placement this year, I feel like these activities best showcase the learning that took place and my own individual strengths.

ACTIVITY TWO: SPRAYIng the snow

Description:

The children had a chance to use 'spray paint' to decorate the snow in a fun way.

Materials:

Snow, food colouring, water, spray bottles.

Connections to FDK Curriculum:

  • OE 14 - demonstrate an awareness of the natural and built environment through hands-on investigations, observations, questions and representations of their findings

  • OE 30 - demonstrate an awareness of themselves as dramatists, actors, dancers, artists, and musicians through engagement in the arts

Objective:

Learn that the outside environment can be fun and wonderful, even if it looks cold.

Observations During Implementation:

The children did a fantastic job of engaging in this activity. Many were able to understand that they would need to share with their peers if they wanted to be able to do fun things like this again. This being said, some children still needed reminding on how to use the sprayers appropriately.

Reflection:

I think that this was a wonderful activity, all children wanted to participate in painting the snow. However, it could have been better if I was able to provide each children with their own sprayer, as they didn't have that much time to do it before having to pass it on to another child.

ACTIVITY FOUR: MARKER RECYCLING

Description:

After a talk about what we can do with old markers, I introduced a marker recycling program to the school.

Materials:

Old markers, vessel to recycle in, markers, paper and tape.

Connections to FDK Curriculum:

  • OE 2 - demonstrate independence, self-regulation, and a willingness to take responsibility in learning and other endeavours

  • OE 19 - collect, organize, display, and interpret data to solve problems and to communicate information, and explore the concept of probability in everyday contexts

  • OE 29 - demonstrate an understanding of the natural world and the need to care for and respect the environment

Objective:

Understand that certain materials can be reused or repurposed, rather than being thrown out.

Observations During Implementation:

The children were excited to be able to have their work displayed throughout the school. A said ' we need to make like a billion posters'!

Reflection:

I think that this was a great activity for the children to be able to learn about their environment and start to take some ownership and pride for their own actions. This program allows for children to monitor their own learning and complete tasks without assistance based on their own judgement.

ACTIVITY SIX: Making Markers

Description:

After two students asked how makers were made, I decided to answer that question by doing.

Materials:

Marker making kit by Crayola.

Connections to FDK Curriculum:

  • OE 14 - demonstrate an awareness of the natural and built environment through hands-on investigations, observations, questions, and representations of their findings

  • OE 25 - demonstrate a sense of identity and a positive self-image

Objective:

Find out how markers are made, by going through the experience in a hands-on manner.

Observations During Implementation:

All of the children were eager to participate in this activity and allowed me to guide them while they were learning. The children were able to wait for their turns and listen to the instructions. All of the children showed a high level of excitement when I told them that I wanted them to take their own markers home.

Reflection:

This activity was super successful, as all children participated and showed interest, without getting silly during the activity. They all attentively watched the marker making process and were excited to use their new makers to create art. Even other teachers were excited and intrigued by this activity and wanted to watch and understand the process.
