LESSONS
This is a lesson plan that I did with my class while we were learning about storytelling and Black History Month. I love teaching content that I am passionate about, as my students are more engaged the more enthusiastic and excited that I am.
Storytelling and Black History Month
Description:
A lesson on important Black figures, connected to our Unit of Inquiry on Storytelling and to Black History Month.
Materials:
Read Aloud: Mae Among the Stars, slideshow, exit tickets, Song: My Family, pencils
Connections to FDK Curriculum:
-
OE 12 – demonstrate an understanding and critical awareness of media texts
-
OE 13 – use the processes and skills of an inquiry stance (i.e., questioning, planning, predicting, observing, and communicating)
-
OE 21 – express their responses to a variety of forms of drama, dance, music, and visual arts from various cultures and communities
Objectives:
1. Students will gain familiarity with several important and influential Black figures.
2. Students will critically respond to a song to find the message.
Observations During Implementation:
My kindies loved listening to the book, discussing some of the African American women who have worked for NASA, playing the game and listening to the song. They were excited, engaged and interested the whole time.
Reflection:
My kindies adored this lesson. They loved learning more about the world around them and thought that some of the Rappers who we talked about had the most hilarious stage names - some of them even created their own stage names and requested that I call them by those names for the rest of the day. I would teach this lesson again in a heartbeat!
